Born of a mutual love of music, beer, party pies and sausage rolls, Benny & The Clones have been playing original music in Far North Queensland for almost a decade, with a total three albums under their collective belt. Originally from Melbourne, they've continued writing and performing Up North, where they're now based.
The band consists of the core trio of Port Douglas-based friends Ben Radford (Guitar, Keys, Lead Vox) Dale Priem (Lead Guitar, Vox) Ben Kuring (Drums, Vox), and various special guests depending on the occasion - usually on bass: Paul Shannon from Melbourne (who appears on the latest album), with Justin Bishop, Wil Cotter and Kim Hurley from Cairns also taking up bass duties for live shows. Other guests include Melbourne's Jon Shannon & Chris Chapple on keys, guitars and vocals.
Lead singer/songwriter Ben Radford is a prolific songwriter and has described the band as a love child of Thom Yorke, Jeff Tweedy, Gene and Dean Ween, Beck, The Go-Betweens and Dan Kelly. That's a lot of parents to have, but a particular style has emerged that they could easily call their own. Their lyrics don't fluff around either - often going straight for the jugular on issues like politics, religion, environment, and the inner workings of the human being.
Accolades include winning the People's Choice award in the 2008 Douglas Songwriting contest, third prize in the 2015 Port Douglas Street Art and Music Festival competition, airplay on Triple J, and seventh place in the inaugural Port Douglas Muso Hot Dog Eating Contest last year.
The Clones have recently released their third self-titled studio record after finalising the album mastering in Nashville, and they’re looking forward to playing more shows with a song catalogue that’s diverse enough for anything from folk festivals to rock shows. From the local street music festivals to shows at the Tanks Arts Centre and local resorts like the Sheraton and QT Port Douglas, they’ve had support slots for acts the likes of Daryl Braithwaite to Custard to Kingswood.
